Phoenix Zoo Trip

We're in Phoenix for Christmas vacation. Yesterday we spent the day at the Phoenix Zoo before heading home for naps before the Christmas Eve service. It was a gorgeous day to go to the zoo!

Unlike our zoo back home, Phoenix has LOTS of giraffes and a huge open space for them to live.

We even got to see them close up AND feed them!
Coolest. Zoo. Ever!

Uncle Dave had to work, otherwise he would have joined us, too. We took the kids by his work the day before - they got to go up in the Tower to watch planes take off and land, and see the air traffic controlers at work. That was pretty neat. Too bad it was illegal to take photos. So just close your eyes and imagine the kids in awe of the airplanes ;)  Anyways... back to the zoo...

There were lots of animals and neat landscapes to see.

Faith had no interest in the little cave once she saw the bugs painted on the wall.
She said, "Um, there's bugs. No thanks, I'll pass"
She cracks us up with her use of the English language ;)

Peek-A-Boo Ruthie! I see you!

The big kids got to ride camels at the zoo, too!

And we even stopped to break some rules and feed the animals ;)

Ruthie has warmed up to Gramma and is in love ;)

There was another larger cave in the zoo, it was a pretty neat play area.

Even the big kids had fun!

There was a monkey village, we walked through and tried to spot the squirrel monkeys.

And orangutans to hang out with.

Then there were the monkeys hanging around outside the exhibits ;)

Baby komodo dragons...

And crazy, silly, kid dragons...

And wart hogs...

And goats at the petting zoo area...

Even Daddy connected with a little goat :)

Just before heading home for naps, there was time to stop and milk the fake cow ;)

It was a great trip to the zoo, but with temps in the upper 60s,
it was hard to believe it was Christmas Eve!

Early Christmas

Because we love spending Christmas with our extended family yet crave a quiet Christmas with just the 5 of us, we compromise most years. We have a family Christmas a few days before all the hustle & bustle begins. Last night was our family Christmas! The kids were super excited! Jacob was super Dad. And me? I was still pretty sick... But my fever was almost gone and I was starting to feel better. So we kept our plans to have a family Christmas!

Jacob ordered pizza for the kids, they ate on the back deck while I nursed a mug of warm chicken broth. And then Jacob announced what the big surprise was - early Christmas!!

The evening began by remembering what the real meaning of Christmas is.
Nathan told us the whole story! And then Jacob read it from the Bible.

Ruth was first to open a present. For someone that hasn't a clue what Christmas is, she didn't pretty great opening a gift first! It was a "walking" little people pony princess from her big brother! Yellow, of course ;)

Ruth was eager to find out what Faith got from big brother, too!
She got a princess crown!

Faith was SOO excited for the crown, that she jumped into Nathan with a giant hug and a "THANK YOU!" (Her old one broke a few months ago, she was soo excited to have a new one!)

Nathan was equally as thrilled with his gift from Faith - a toy plane. He hugged his sister right back!

And Daddy? He got a card game based off an iphone game that he's addicted to - Temple Run. So now he can feed his addiction and be sociable at the same time ;)  hehe

Ruthie got a musical Dora microphone from her sister. She loves bopping to the music!

And the hugs never ceased! Our sweet girl was so thankful for knee & elbow pads (for riding her scooter), that she jumped into a hug with Daddy, too!

His first set of legos! He's thrilled!
Let's hope they're nice to bare feet in the middle of the night ;)

More hugs! I love our kiddos!

Ruthie got some color wonder finger paint!
She's been in love with coloring and painting lately. Unfortunately you'll notice that the moment you walk in our house..... a sick mommy on Monday meant a little girl got away with coloring on a lot of walls...... But with color wonder, the paint will only show on the special paper and not our couch!

Faith got a Tinkerbell bubble set from Ruth!

And Nathan got a playdoh construction truck set from Ruth!
("Just what I've always wanted!" he exclaimed... ha ha!)

Ruth got some play food for the kitchen set.
Pretending to cook is her favorite thing (well, next to tagging all our walls...)

A new dress up outfit for our princess!

Then the kids all opened one gift at the same time, since they were all very similar gifts.

Silly towels! Ruth is a giraffe, Nathan a shark, and Faith a unicorn!
Faith hasn't taken her towel off all day - in fact, it already needs to be washed, cause it went outside with her this morning!

Ruthie got more play food, and Faith got an AppleJack purse (it's a My Little Pony thing)

Nathan was thrilled to pieces to open his own Spiderman outfit!

While Ruth nibbled on some of her play food ;)

Nathan's last gift was a giant diaper box - he was confused and certain that it must have been meant for Ruth. haha! But when he opened it, it was ecstatic to find a bunch of sets of light-up legos!

And apparently the box was as big of a hit as anything else :)

What'd Mommy & Daddy get? Jacob got the card game as well as some ammo, hot sauce, a portable iphone speaker, a surround sound system and some new underwear ;)  I got a pastry decorator set, some new cooking gadgets and a keychain "wireless leash" that will help me find my lost phone or lost keys - the man knows me too well on that one :)

The kids opened their stockings once the room was somewhat clean.
I didn't really get pics of the other kids with their stockings... oops. They got apples, oranges and some candy. Nathan got a lemon, a notebook, stampers and some little army men. Faith got a necklace, notebook and headband. But Ruth had zero desire to see what else was in her stocking once she saw the beloved peeps :)

Daddy persuaded her to keep digging, and once she found the light up spinning toy, that was it! Forget about peeps, play food or the giant diaper box. She was in love!

While Ruth admired her spinning light, Nathan & Faith
tried on their new dress up clothes and opened new toys.

The light eventually wasn't as cool as Daddy, as they all played with the walking princess pony toy just before heading to bed.

And there was one more BIG gift that we didn't open last night.
That's because the kids helped build it Saturday!

A HUGE sandbox from Granny, Pa, Mommy & Daddy.

The sand arrived Monday, while Mommy was dying in her bed from the worst bug ever. So I haven't gotten any other photos with all 3 kids playing yet. But I'll get more soon. And Daddy still has one more piece of hardi board to add to the roof, and a few seats to nail in (Nathan's super anxious to use his hammer and "help")  But overall, it's a HIT! The kids LOVE the sandbox. They say, "THANK YOU, Granny & Pa!"

Christmas Ideas

Happy day after Thanksgiving!

A few family members have asked for Christmas ideas/sizes for the kids. So I figured I'd put together a list and share it with anyone interested - plus, it's a way for me to remember what the kids were into when they were little :)

Nathan:
* Size 6-7 in shirts and pants. I try to stick with 7 slims in pants. But some companies offer a 6, and that fits well... other companies skip the 6 and go straight to 7s... I don't understand it. (BTW, how did he grow so fast?!?!)
* Size 13.5 or 1 in shoes
* Nathan is currently in love with legos - especially ninja legos (which he has none of). He also loves playmobil and is fascinated with erector sets - though he doesn't have any yet. He'll tell you I told him he could get an erector set when he's 9, but that was before I knew they make them for kids as young as 4!... Any of those things are great ideas for our mini-engineer who loves puzzles & problem solving things. He also loves creative art stuff. We got him a bunch of light up legos, but that was before his recent ninja fascination started (that'll teach mom to start Christmas shopping in September...)

Faith:
* Size 6 in shirts, dresses & PJs. 5 (not 5T) in pants. She's REALLY hard to fit for jeans. I won't buy jeans anymore unless she's there to try them on. So stick with non-jeans
* Size 11 in shoes
* Faith is harder to shop for when it comes to toys... She doesn't have much of an attention span. She really doesn't care for most electronics. She just loves anything that spurs on her imagination. At the moment, that's unicorns. She has asked for "a real unicorn that she can ride, that talks and won't poop on my pillow" for Christmas. She loves little dolls/ponies and small toys that she can play make-believe with. She's also in love (still) with My Little Pony everything.

Ruth:
* Size 3T in long sleeve shirts and pants. But size 4T in short sleeve shirts or PJs.
* Size 7 in shoes
* Ruth is our book lover. I use to think Nathan loved books. Ruth puts him to shame. She would love nothing more than for you to just read to her ALL. DAY. LONG. And if you give her a dum dum (lollipop) to suck on while you read to her... well, you'll have a friend for life! Ruth likes playing make-believe, too. On a 2 year old's level. Her favorite thing at home is "cooking", so we got her a bunch of play food. Not sure what else we'll find to get her though. Ruth enjoys trying to participate in whatever game/activity her big sibs are doing at the moment. Therefore, she also loves My Little Ponies and Ninja Lego warriors...

We're looking forward to seeing some family in a few weeks, and can't wait to see the rest of you sometime in 2014! We're so thankful to God for the blessing of our families!
